Read in your preferred language

You can change the display language for the entire site. There is a “Translation” menu in the footer at the bottom of every page.

By default, this site will display everything in your preferred language. Unfortunately, the displayed translations may not be perfect. If you can read more than one language, you can try changing the Translation menu.

Remember: Contributors submit their answers in their preferred language. So (for example) not everything is translated from English. It’s best to leave the Translate menu set to your preferred reading language. You can always change the Translation setting if you think a contributor’s answer was written in a language you can read (and was then translated poorly by us.)

Translation is automatic

Every phrase on the site is automatically translated into all of the languages we support. By default, the system uses free, public translation engines. The system translates from any language, into all the other languages. This enables us to publish each answer in whichever original language was used by the author. The translation software can also expand to use commercial translation services. Those services use real people to inspect and improve the initial machine generated translations.

Would you like to help us?

If you can read/write multiple languages and would like to help, please use the contact form on the About page to let us know. We can set you up so that you can edit any phrase on the site, just by logging in and then clicking.

For example, if you wanted to help improve our French language, you would flip the “Translation” menu to French and mark a checkbox (which appears in the footer when we grant you translate powers. :) Then the entire site shows controls that you can click to edit. You can change as little or as much as you think would help. Here’s a screen grab showing how I could change one phrase in a large page of text:

It would be most helpful if people would volunteer to improve our static pages (this page itself, the list of questions, our Contributor’s FAQ, the About page) in all the languages shown in the Translation drop-down menu in the footer.
